Hello, I am Susan Olij,
Olij Studio is my creative space without the boundary of location, I am both online and offline, a universal space to create and connect meaningfully with people.
I grew up in an ecclectic and creative household, my Indonesian mother paints on textiles, and my Dutch father makes modernist sculptures while listening to afro cuban music. As an adult, I have lived in London and NYC, and spend summer's in the Netherlands, Indonesia and Spain. These places created the curious explorer and artist that I am today.
The last 20 years, I've been mainly based in Singapore as travel becomes a very important part of my art practice.
In mid 2018, I store the studio and the home in Singapore, and started travelling the world, and in the process produced travel sketchbooks. And during the pandemic, I produced volumes more of watercolour sketchbooks while travel sketching to places in Singapore.
I have been a lecturer with LaSalle College of the Arts Singapore since 2010 and since October 2019, I launched a new short course, titled Travel Sketching, which runs 3-4 times a year, where I teach an intensive beginner sketching in watercolour and ink.
