“As it happens” A Spontaneous Workshop in Georgetown

Join us for an incredible opportunity to learn from artist and traveller Susan Olij and discover how to be a confident creator, sketchbook artist, and traveler. Over three immersive days, you'll learn to adapt your creative practice to new environments, build self-confidence in your artistic voice, and develop the skills to sketch and create wherever your travels take you.

This workshop is designed for artists who want to break free from their comfort zone and learn how to find inspiration, follow their curiosity, and create meaningful work in unfamiliar places. Whether you're sketching in a bustling café or capturing street scenes, you'll gain the tools and mindset to approach travel as a creative practice.

Why Georgetown? This workshop is not in Singapore because I am a traveller who teach travel sketching, as it happens, I am going to be in Georgetown in these dates, so this is a call for you, to step up if you’d like to challenge your agility and spontaneity. Travel sketching requires adaptability, and learning in a new environment is the best way to develop these essential skills.

Prerequisites: This is an intermediate-level workshop. Participants must have an existing art practice or have previously taken Susan’s workshops or short courses. This workshop is not suitable for beginners.

Pricing:

  • $500/person for all workshops

  • $120 Monday Extra workshop

  • $450/person for Friday to Sunday workshops

  • $220/person for just ONE off, one of any of the workshops

The pricing is designed to accommodate different permutations of schedules.

You can choose what works best for yours.

The meeting locations will all be decided on the fly, and subject to change depending on weather, and other unforeseen circumstances, but it will always be within the heart of Georgetown old city area. All logistic communications via Whatsapp chat group.

Itinerary:

Friday

  • Arrival from Singapore

  • Free afternoon

  • 5–8pm: Workshop 1

    • How to find your creativity in a new place

    • How to follow your curiosity

    • What to look for when you listen to what the city has to offer

    • Demonstration of current techniques, setup, paint kit, and survival mindset

    • Dinner and Q&A about assignment

Saturday

  • 8:30–11:30am: Self-guided sketchwalk

  • 12–2pm: Lunch

  • 2–5pm: Free time

  • 5–8pm: Workshop 2

    • Review of morning sketches

    • Show and tell by students with feedback sessions

    • Demonstrating alternative approaches based on student works

    • Dinner

  • 8–10pm: Optional art jam/night sketching

Sunday

  • 8:30–11:30am: Workshop 3 – Working in a café: Interior sketching

    • Quick rolling feedback of works

  • 12–2pm: Lunch

  • 2–5pm: Free time

  • 5–8pm: Free evening sketch session on location

  • 8–9pm: Final feedback and review

Monday (Optional)

  • 8:30–11:30am: Optional Extra Workshop

    • Revision and redoing

    • Putting it all together

    • Self-reflection journaling

  • End of workshop

  • Return to Singapore

This is a basic itinerary and is subject to changes due to the nature of travel sketching trips, but Susan will always do her best to maintain a similar itinerary.

What's Not Included:

  • Flights to and from Georgetown

  • Accommodation

  • Meals (except workshop dinners on Friday and Saturday)

  • Art supplies and materials

  • Personal sketching kit

  • Travel insurance

  • Transportation within Georgetown

  • Any additional activities outside of scheduled workshops
